~ Pregnancy and Postpartum Fitness ~ Education ~ Girls Who Lead ~
Hi, I’m Katie.
Mom of three busy little gals, and wife to Lorin. My husband and I farm in rural Alberta, Canada, alongside our family. After three very different pregnancies and deliveries, I recognized a gap in support for women who want to continue or begin exercise during their pregnancy and postpartum seasons. Advice was very generalized, and mainstream messaging extreme. Individualized guidance on what was safe, applicable and manageable was non-existent.
Pregnancy is a stage, but we are forever postpartum. Many women reach their 6-week appointment with their healthcare provider and dive right back into exercise at 100% intensity, or where they left off in pregnancy. While this may feel great mentally, we are still healing from the inside- out at 6 weeks postpartum (and our pregnancy, mode of delivery and experience all matters). Guidance in maintaining movement practice in pregnancy and returning to fitness postpartum with consideration to your core and pelvic floor can be so helpful in mitigating and managing symptoms that are common, but not often discussed during this stage (incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse, diastasis recti).
I wanted women to have access to information and a place to ask questions surrounding exercise during one of the most vulnerable seasons in a woman’s life, so I certified as a Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism coach in order to fill the gap in my community.
I’ve worked to become who I needed and am so excited to offer my support and encouragement to you through Pregnancy & Postpartum specific fitness classes, women’s strength classes, consultations, education, assessments and home workout programming. Our athleticism does not end when motherhood begins. (Brianna Battles, P&PA CEO)
I can’t wait to meet you where you’re at, and help you get to where you want to go, whether that’s back to running, strength classes, Crossfit, HIIT or playing in the backyard with your kids (or grandkids!) In taking an individualized, whole person approach, we take the next best step in your fitness journey, because what we do in fitness translates to our daily activities.
In Winter of 2023, I partnered with Jamie McElgunn (Co-Facilitator) to develop a program called Girls Who Lead. Knowing that we lose 40% of our girls from sport and organized activity by the age of 11 and that girls’ confidence levels drop by 30% upon entering puberty, we decided to respond to the stats with programming developed to 'build confidence in leadership & movement’ for girls ages 6-12 in the County of Newell. We run extra-curricular sessions, summer camps, speaking engagements, parent/caregiver sessions and school programming alongside our four incredible Jr. Coaches. (See our Girls Who Lead page for more info!)
We want girls and women to have more information through every vulnerable stage, and our initiative comes full circle when we connect through confidence in strength and movement at every stage.
Let’s play the Long Game together, anticipate the challenges and work together to reach the peaks of potential over a lifetime.
Moving through Motherhood
-
I want women to have more information than I did about exercise in Pregnancy and in returning to it Postpartum. To have an idea of pelvic health over a lifetime and how to adjust exercise according to their individual tendencies, symptoms and life stage.
-
To help fill the gaps in women’s care with resources that are joined hand in hand, and for women to have the knowledge needed to advocate for themselves and by extension, for their families.
-
I support women in an exercise capacity throughout life’s most vulnerable stages, with core and pelvic health considerations in mind, encouraging a lifetime of athleticism.
